Each spring visitors pour into the gardens to stroll through the lush groves of azaleas. Many use the gardens as a natural, attractive backdrop for graduation, family and wedding portraits. Small weddings are held in the gardens as well. Throughout the summer and fall months, visitors continue to stop through to see the variety of flora, some bringing picnics to share.

Created as a service to the general public, the WRAL Gardens surround the WRAL Television Studios. A wide variety of azaleas and other plants typical of a Southern garden fill the landscape.

A. J. Fletcher, founder of Capitol Broadcasting Company, designed the 5-acre WRAL Gardens. He carefully laid out the winding paths, selected the plants, and determined the best location to place benches on which visitors could rest. The WRAL Gardens were first opened to the public in 1959, and remain a small sanctuary away from Raleigh's paved streets, numerous shopping centers, and congested traffic lights.
